imageWhat Is Collagen?
Your skin is composed of three layers. The outermost layer is called the epidermis, which acts as a protective layer. Just beneath the epidermis is the second layer of skin, the dermis. This layer is composed of many elements. Collagen, a protein, forms a network of fibers that provides a framework for the growth of blood vessels and other cells of the skin. Collagen acts as a support structure for your skin.

Why Do Lines Appear?
Lines and wrinkles result from natural aging and chronic sun damage. Chronic sun exposure damages the collagen framework causing it to weaken and lose its elasticity. Sun damaged skin is less elastic and resilient. Facial wrinkles result from the combined effects of gravity and facial expressions: smiling, frowning, squinting, etc.

How Does Collagen Replacement Therapy Work?
Collagen replacement therapy (CRT) replenishes the skin's natural collagen support layer. This can smooth facial lines and scars. CRT involves the injection of collagen just beneath the skin's surface, producing an immediate visible difference in the appearance of your skin and filling of the wrinkle or scar.

What Is Collagen Replacement Therapy Like?
A skin test is required before you can start having collagen replacement therapy. This involves the injection a small amount of collagen into the forearm similar to a TB test. The test is read in 4 weeks to ensure that you do not have a reaction to the collagen. Approximately 97% of women and men tested show no reaction to the skin test and are eligible for treatment. Cosmoderm, Cosmoplast, and Restylane® are now available and require no allergy testing.

The injections are performed on an outpatient basis. Treatment sessions last from 15-60 minutes depending upon the number of areas treated. The injections are performed with a very fine needle causing minimal discomfort. After the procedure there is mild redness and swelling which last 12-24 hours. Bruising is occasionally noticed and can last 7-10 days.

How Long Will The Results Last?
Just like natural collagen, injectable collagen eventually loses its form and is broken down by the body's natural processes. Ongoing treatments are required to maintain the improvements achieved with collagen replacement therapy. Most patients require re-treatment 2-4 times per year.
